Chapter 6: When in Doubt, It's from Shakespeare...

Discuss a work that you are familiar with that alludes to or reflects Shakespeare (other than a sonnet or Shakespearean play). Show how the author uses this connection thematically. Read pages 44-46 carefully. In these pages, Foster shows how Fugard reflects Shakespeare through both plot and theme. In your discussion, focus on THEME.

NOTE: When quoting directly from the chapter, USE QUOTATION MARKS!!!...and identify page numbers.

A work of writing that I find the theme to be similar to Shakespeare is the Twilight Series. If you compare Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet to the Twilight series the themes are very similar. In Romeo and Juliet they are considered star-crossed lovers. It is very similar for Edward and Bella. Even though their parents aren't enemies Bella is a human, and Edward is a vampire who eats humans. Clearly they aren't meant to be together. Throughout Twilight the theme stays similar to Romeo and Juliet. In conclusion, I fine that the twilight series has a theme that reflects Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

  2. A writing that I know of and find that it is similar to Shakespeare is the modern movie, based off of the real Romeo and Juliet, Gnomeo and Juliet. This is a recent movie that is very similar to the real Romeo and Juliet. The writers based it off of the true stories. The two main characters are gnomes and their families have always hated each other. They fall in love with each other and have to secretly meet. This is all very similar to Romeo and Juliet except some minor details. The only thing that is a major difference is the ending. The families don't learn to get along after the death of their children, they just learn to get along for their children. In this story, the viewer can obviously tell that the two main characters shouldn't be together, but they love each other and get together anyway. This animated film has an extremely similar theme as the old time story Romeo and Juliet, in my opinion.

  3. A writing that I find similar to the writing of Shakespeare is the well-known story of Cinderella. In both stories, the theme to me is "you can't help who you fall in love with." This is why I think this...
In the story Cinderella, the step-mother did not want Cinderella to even go to the ball which is similar to the reaction of a person at the feast due to Romeo being a Montague. This is due to Cinderella being totally opposite to the actual Prince. According to Romeo and Juliet, they both came from different parts of two different families who did not get along at all. However, Cinderella did make it to the ball, which is similar that Romeo and Juliet met at a party similar, and that is where they met. After they met, they all fell deeply in love. Despite the ending, everything that happens is quite similar if you think of it. The endings, however, are completely different due to Cinderella and the Prince living happily ever after, and Romeo and Juliet ending in death. Overall, Cinderella does remind me a lot to Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare.

A movie that is similar to Shakespeare's stories is "West Side Story." In the movie it's almost the same as Romeo and Juliet. It has the two families that feuding against each other, and their son and daughter loves each other. They both meet each other at a dance. In the end of the movie a tragic scene happens. The theme connects with Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Like in Romeo and Juliet, Maria and Tony started secretly meeting each other for their families don't find out and then they also planned to run away. Both of the story and movie has a tragic end. Shakespeare wrote his story as a play, West Side Story is a movie but it still can be seen in a play also. Overall, Romeo and Juliet story was based on West Side Story.

A writing that I find similar to Shakespeare’s work is the Twilight saga. Edward and Bella resemble Romeo and Juliet, so does their love. Jacob and Paris play a similar role too. They both still have feelings for the girls, even though they are in love with another guy. Paris, a character from Romeo and Juliet, still loved Juliet, knowing that she was in love with Romeo. Jacob felt the same way with Bella in Twilight. Romeo and Paris (just like Edward and Jacob) showed conflict between each other for the love of Juliet (same for Bella). Both girl characters become heartbroken when their lovers leave. Edward left because he felt like he was no good for Bella, and in one point of Shakespeare’s work, Romeo was banned from the kingdom and has to leave Juliet. Also in Romeo and Juliet, the parents forbid Romeo and Juliet’s love. This is similar to how Charlie, Bella’s dad, felt about Edward and Bella’s relationship and displayed a grumpy attitude towards Edward. The themes of both writings have some of the same aspects when it comes to how their relationships are affected by outside forces.

Read Literature like a Professor: Chapter 6

The story that I think of that is similar in theme to Romeo and Juliet is Shrek. Both stories are about two people (or Ogres) whose love is forbidden. In the movie, Shrek, Princess Fiona learns to love Shrek for who he is on the inside. Love is forbidden for Shrek and Fiona just like it is forbidden for Romeo and Juliet. The whole theme of the stories is that love can exist in very different forms between two very different people. Age, weight, height and other stuff like that does not matter. Love is something special that is shared with that one person.

This selection makes me think of the Cinderella story. This girl falls in love with someone she never met. They see each other at school. They don't know that they know each other. Because, they dont see each others name when they text. She couldn't help but talk to him. The selection an this story deals with love. They can't help who they fall in love with. This is very normal for anyone til this day. No one wanted it to be her to fall in love with the popular kid at school.

A story that I think is similar to Romeo and Juliet is The Little Mermaid. In both stories, the main characters are star-crossed lovers. They come from different groups or families. Just like Juliet is a Capulet who hates the Montagues, Arial is a mermaid, who hates the humans. When she first sees Eric, she falls in love with him. Much like how Romeo falls in love with Juliet when he first sees her. The love is forbidden but they make it work out, even if it has to be secret. Arial sacrifices her voice, the only way for her to connect with Eric, to be with him. The theme in both comes as love can work out between very different people if it's fated. Nothing can stop love. It doesn't matter who or what you are...everyone deserves love.

I find that Romeo and Juliet is a similar story to that of Cinderella. Just like in Cinderella, Romeo and Juliet are star crossed lovers. They came from completely different types of lives in both stories. Romeo goes looking for Juliet just like the prince goes looking for Cinderella after she loses the shoe. When Romeo and Juliet first met each other they fell in live, much like at the ball in Cinderella when the prince and Cinderella danced together they fell in love. The theme is meant to be that if the love is true =, the love will find its way into both.

Throughout the work of Shakespeare, he always finds a way to include love. Romeo and Juliet relates to The Hunger Games in several ways. The major way is by love. In Romeo and Juliet, both families are fighting against each other with hate, but that does not stop Romeo and Juliet from being with each other. With every obstacle, comes a great adventure. They both loved each other too much to just give up which is why they did what they did in the end. In The Hunger Games, Katniss and Peeta are fighting for their lives when they eventually realize love is in the air as well. The theme between the two would be that: If it is true love, nothing is ever going to get in the way. If it is meant to be, then nothing can get in the middle of who or what the situation involves. Therefore, both Romeo and Juliet as well as The Hunger Games relates in many ways especially with the term love used in the theme stated above.

  12. The story of Romeo and Juliet remind me of the movie, "The Notebook." Just like in Romeo and Juliet, the families don't see eye to eye on lots of things. Allie and Noah were completely opposite because Noah wasn't that wealthy, but Allie was on the higher class side. In Romeo and Juliet the familes are enemies. Even though the reason is different in the movies, the two couples still didn't have the blessing of the parents to see each other. Also in the Notebook, Allie and Noah fall deeply in love just like Romeo and Juliet do. One last thing that reminds me of the Notebook when reading Romeo and Juliet is in the stories the two couples die together. Romeo and Juliet commit suicide together, and Noah and Allie are together one last night and die in their sleep together. Both these love stories are alike in many ways, and to me Nichollos Sparks and William Shakespeare both right most of their books about love.

  13. A movie I know that is similar to Romeo and Juliet is, "The Titanic." In this movie, Rose and Jack are the star crossed lovers in a way much like Romeo and Juliet. Both sets of lovers cannot be together for the same reason: family. In "The Titanic", Rose's family wants her to be with someone rich because they're rich too. The problem is Jack is very poor, and her family doesn't approve. This causes them to have to sneak around in order to be together. Juliet and Rose both have to rebel against their families. This is something different than what their normal character does. This means, they were both shy and not very out-spoken. This changes when they meet their lovers. In both stories, there is a tragic ending and the couples are forced to be separated. From the beginning, they are both doomed to not being together. In the ending of Romeo and Juliet, they both kill themselves. In the ending of The Titanic, the ship sinks and Jack forces Rose to stay alive while he dies. In my opinion, both stories involve teenagers doing major actions because of love. Those actions are sad, exciting, and romantic.

  14. Something similar to Romeo and Juliet I think is the Hunger Games. How Peeta and Katniss are supposed to kill each other. In the games they are i guess you could say supposed to have a hatred due to the fact they are "enemies". Same thing with Romeo and Juliet. They both are supposed to be enemies and hate each other. But it turns out they end up loving each other. But Hunger Games ends in a happy ending with the two falling in love and escaping death. Where in Romeo and Juliet they both fall in love and it looks to be a happy ending but both tragically die.

  15. I think that the story of The Little Mermaid is very similar to Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Ariel falls in love with Prince Eric as soon as she sees him. There is one problem with this; she is a mermaid and he is a human. Their families do not get along, so their love is seen as impossible. Just like Romeo and Juliet’s families don’t get along, but they find a way to be together just like Ariel and Eric. In both stories, the star-crossed lovers sacrifice something to be able to be together. They may have to keep their love a secret but they’ll do anything because of how strong their love is. Both of these stories exhibit the theme that love will always find a way.

  16. I think the movie Avatar is sort of similar to Romeo and Juliet. I think it is because in Avatar the character is a human and he switches back and forth from human to avatar to explore the forest. The humans are enemies with the people or the blue people that live in the forest, just like Romeo and Juliet's families. Jake Sully who plays the main character in Avatar falls in love with one of the forest people. When the humans find out they attack him and the people of the forest. Sully and the avatars are now hated, kind of like Romeo and Juliet. He then risk his life to be with them.

  17. There are many movies that are similar to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. To me, the movie "The Notebook" is most similar to it. Noah and Allie are two teenagers who fall in love one summer. Allie comes from a very wealthy family, so of course her parents want her to marry another wealthy person. Noah is a very loving and caring guy but he does not have very much money. This causes conflict between Allie and her parents because since they want her to be with someone who has money they do not want her to see Noah. This is similar to Romeo & Juliet because their families do not get along so they do not want them being together. Also, like Romeo does, Noah does not give up on Allie despite what her parents say. He loves her and would do anything to be with her, even if he has to sneak around a little bit.

  18. The novel The Hunger Games relates to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The Hunger Games features Peeta and Katniss. In the games, they are supposed to kill each other, but they come together in the end and stick together. Because they are both in the games, it is expected they would eventually go against each other. In Romeo and Juliet, they are in a related situation. Both their families hate each other, so they are expected to hate each other as well. They end up falling in love, just as Peeta and Katniss did. In the ending of Romeo and Juliet, Juliet sees Romeo dead so she kills herself. She doesn't want to live without him. In The Hunger Games, the idea is to have one person left, so Peeta and Katniss decide to both die instead of having one kill the other. Before they go through with their plan, they are stopped and both crowned victors. In both stories, they would rather die than be without that person.

A writing that I find is similar to Shakespear's Romeo and Juliet is The Hunger Games. I think this is similar because like Romeo and Juliet, Peeta and Katniss are star-crossed lovers. In the book Peeta and Katniss are chosen to be the tributes for distric 12 and are sent to the capital to play in the Hunger Games where they will have to be clever and kill to servive. You would think because they are enemies they would hide things from each other and separate from each other when they are training but that is exactly the opposite. Peeta and Katniss accualy help each other out both in and out of the games, they trained together and shared their ideas on other tributes. In the games when the gamemakers announce that the two tridutes from one district can win together Katniss's motive changes from trying to servive by herself to trying to get both her and Peeta home. Even though they were suppose to be each others enemy they accualy really did love each other and in the end they would rather die then have to kill each other.

A writing that I find is similar to Shakespeare would be the movie The Little Mermaid. In this movie, Arial, a mermaid princess, has always wanted to see what the world on the land was like. When she swims to the surface one night she sees Prince Eric prancing around on his ship. Arial instantly falls in love with Prince Eric, but keep in mind that she is a mermaid and her father forbids her to ever go near the surface of the water. When the ship bursts into flames, Arial is beside Prince Eric singing to him. He awakes, but only catches a glimpse of the princess and only has the memory of her voice. This resembles Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet are considered to be star-crossed lovers. Arial and Eric are the same. The two come from two completely different worlds and are supposed to be destined to never meet. But when Arial's father sees how in love the two are, he can't stand to see his daughter sad. He changes his outlook on humans and allows his daughter to marry. This story has a different ending from Romeo and Juliet. This ending is happy, while Romeo and Juliet have a tragic ending. But in the end, the two stories share the same theme.

I think that Cinderella is similar to Romeo and Juliet. Cinderella's stepmother tried to keep her from going to the ball, but she goes anyway. The prince falls in love with Cinderella. When the clock struck midnight Cinderella had to leave. On her way out she lost one of her glass slippers. The next day the prince went looking for whoever owned the glass slipper. When it was Cinderella's turn to try on the glass slipper her stepmother trips him. The glass slipper breaks, but then Cinderella pulls out the matching glass slipper and it fits perfectly. Even though the stepmother tried to keep Cinderella away from the prince, Cinderella and the prince lived happily ever after.

  23. The story that is similar with Romeo and Juliet is Cinderella.I think this because in both stories they both end up falling end love with someone that they shouldn't. Everyone finds this out they all get angry. Cinderella was told to not go to the ball, but she ended up going and met her love. Which in Romeo and Juliet they met at a party also, which is were their feelings developed for each other. A lot that goes on during both of these stories are the same, but there are also some differences. One thing that was different was the ending of both stories. In Romeo and Juliet the two lovers die, but in Cinderella the lovers stay alive and love each other forever. The story of Cinderella reminds me a lot of Romeo and Juliet.

I think that the move similar to Romeo and Juliet is the Twilight Series. Edward and Bella are in love but it is hard for them to be together for a reason. Edward is a vampire and this somewhat makes them not be together right away. They fell in love right from the start just like Romeo and Juliet. They are star-crossed lovers because they are in love but there is one thing keeping them apart at first. They have a strong love but they never know if they can be together at first because Edward is always putting Bella in danger. Although they have this bump in the road, they end up being together and living a long happy life together.

A writing that I find similar to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is "The Hunger Games series" The general motive is one victor standing. It was almost impossible for them to be together, when only one could survive. I The Hunger Games, they were known as star cross lovers. They saved each other, almost ending the games in a double suicide.

  28. A work that I am familiar with that reflects Shakespeare is the movie Gnomeo and Juliet. The Red gnomes and the Blue gnomes hate each other much like the Capulet's and the Montague's hate each other. Gnomeo and Juliet meet accidentally and neither of them knew that they were of the other family (or color in this case). They meet and fall in love. Once they find out that the other is of the enemy family, they become worried but do not deny that they love each other. Like the balcony scene in Romeo and Juliet, Gnomeo climbs a fence where Juliet rests on her podium. Juliet races over and they talk about meting secretly. The movie went as close as to use the nurse's character by portraying her as Juliet's best friend whom, by the way, is a quite comical frog. The only thing different about the play Romeo and Juliet and the movie Gnomeo and Juliet is that neither die at the end. Gnomeo and Juliet live "happily ever after". When the Red and Blue families realize that the two are happy together, they put aside their differences and get along.

A story I think that's similar to Romeo and Juliet is the almost non-existent one in Les Miserables (musical version). Eponine and Marius come from two different worlds, but still manage to be best friends. Eponine is madly in love with him, but Marius falls in love with another girl, Cosette. When the June Rebellion, or "Revolution" as it is referred to in the story", breaks out, Marius joins them, as well as Eponine in a suicide attempt because she can no longer be with Marius. The happy ending between Eponine and Marius never occurs because she takes a bullet for him in the Revolution. The love story is tragic, just like Romeo and Juliet's.

Beauty and the Beast reflects "Romeo and Juliet" because in both shows, both people are completely different and know nothing about each other. A work I am familiar with that seems similar to Shakespeare is Disney's " Tangled." Tangled shares the same theme as Romeo and Juliet because in both of these works, they fall for someone that they shouldn't have. In Tangled, Rapunzel falls in love with Flynn Ryder who happens to be a crook trying to sneak away from the authorities, and much like in Romeo and Juliet, they despise each other from the start but they sort of start accepting one another. A work that resembles Romeo and Juliet is the Twilight Saga. Romeo would be Edward and Bella, Juliet. Jacob could also represent Paris. He wouldn't mind being with Juliet, but Juliet does loves someone else. When the "star-crossed" lovers meet they fall in love instantly. Bella and Edward fall in love more slowly than Juliet and Romeo, but they do love each other just as much in the end. In conclusion, the stories show similar themes.

  33. There are many of stories that resemble " Romeo and Juliet ". But, the story that sticks out to me that is mostly the same is The Hunger Games. In Romeo and Juliet, they know nothing about eachother, they just happen to meet all of a sudden and thats what happend in the Hunger Games. They were just picked and went to this place where they knew nothing about eachother and were to kill the people to be the last one alive. But, in the end of The Hunger Games, they ended up stickoing with eachother and had not killed one another and became one in the end. So, did Romeo and Juliet. In the end of "Romeo and Juliet", they are finally together and love one another. So, thats how the Hunger Games and Romeo and Juliet are the closes stories to one another.
